5 Things You Didn’t Know You Could Put in The Washer

Most of the time we use our washing machines to wash our clothes and that’s it. We’ll periodically throw in our sheets, blankets, and towels as needed. But really that’s all we use it for. Although we’ve come so far from handwashing it’s almost unthinkable to put other items in the washing machine.
We have these appliances for a reason right? They make our lives simpler and easier. That’s why we need to get the most out of them while they’re running in good shape. We’ve come up with a list of things that you didn’t know you can put in the washer but the good news is that you can.

Shoes

canvas or nylon sneakers can be washed in the washer. Simply remove the laces and place in a pillowcase to contain them while they wash. And remove any inner soles or padding that will come out of the sneaker itself. Using a normal amount of detergent wash on a delicate cycle with cold water. You may also add a tablespoon of white vinegar to help deodorize the shoes. Then air dry when finished.

Pet Beds

Check the label on the bed prior to throwing it in the wash. Some pet beds can’t be thrown in the washer. But while you not may be able to throw the entire pet bed itself into the washer, you can always throw the cover in it it has one.

Oven Mitts

This one is easy. Most of the time we just don’t think to clean our oven mitts. Throw them in with a load of towels.

Backpacks

Start by opening pockets, checking for anything loose. Shake out any crumbs or debris into the garbage can. Then place the backpack in a laundry bag or pillowcase. Wash it on a gentle cycle in cold water using a gentle detergent like Woolite or equivalent. Once it’s finished hang it to dry.

Reusable Shopping Bags

Before throwing your reusable shopping bag in the washer, check the label first. If they are canvas, use a hot-water regular cycle with the usual amount of detergent when washing them. Then throw them in the washer on air-dry or with light heat.
